Had a great short lived visit to St. George. Stayed with Terry and Tim Porter. Great running friends! I went to the start of the race and it was 33 degrees. I was hoping for maybe high 40's. No such luck. The sun did come out as I was leaving today at 1:30 though! Thanks! I started the race and my legs felt heavy. the pace was pretty fast and my first mile was 5:45 and it felt like 5:15. I saw a High School buddy who was extremely fast and on my same team named Steve Sumsion. He actually took 2nd in State in Cross Country and ended up running for Utah till they destroyed there running program. He did very well running for Uof U also. He hasnt been running and has some damn much talent. I told him he had to get back in the scene. Anywho, I got to mile 6 and was in 6th overall at that point and a guy named Jose Soccoro passed me and brushed my shoulder! I thought it was kind of weird but let him pass and then he slowed down so I got up next to him and was trying to pass but he kept speeding up. I really didnt care so I let him. He then proceeded to bump me with his arm and body every once in a while and at first I thought he couldnt run in a straight line. I kind of thought he was trying to psych me out so I slowed down on purpose but he matched me. This happened from mile 6 till the finish. I actually got sick of it at mile 9 and ran to the oncoming side of the road to get away from him. He dashed over to my side and bumped me off the shoulder I finally bumped him back and crossed the other side of the road. I have never been in a situation where i had a guy all over me like that! It was a new experience that I didnt want to go to. When I finished my buddy Steve Olsen asked me about him and told me he did the same thing to him in Mesquite half marathon. He chuckled at me when he saw me cross the road. Nice one!  It was an honest course that humbled me and will get me running more. It was fun to see so many familiar smiling faces! I wished the weather was better but oh well.

Nice job Walter! Do not know what to say about your road hogging friend, but he was not the only one. I had a difficult time passing all day.

From RAD on Sat, Jan 23, 2010 at 22:52:14 from 67.172.229.125

I just have to laugh, I guess I have enough 'contact sport' in me that if he did that to me, I'd probably trip him! (Sorry, not so nice, but it's easy when someone is running next to you and no one -not even a ref- could really tell it was you). However, I digress :)

You did a great job, you've worked through some injury and though YOU didn't birth the baby, you've got a lot on your plate with just having a baby. I think you did a GREAT job! Next time we run together I'll teach you how to trip people :)

From Walter on Sat, Jan 23, 2010 at 22:59:25 from 24.10.169.110

Jody, I know right!? Its almost like you have to plan out a strategy to get ahead of everyone before you get to some of the trails. I was actually running next to the bump meister and it was hard to run on one side of the trail 2 wide. We missed good weather too huh?

Rachel, I feel really awesome after this race. I hope I can chalk it up and use it to get better.

From JamesH on Sun, Jan 24, 2010 at 00:02:04 from 74.211.22.194

Good job today Walter. Steve O was telling Steve Hooper about that guy you were battling and I couldnt help but laugh. Not because its funny (I would have cold cocked that putz) but because of the way he was telling it and his own experience with him. Anyway, you still ran a good race.

From Superfly on Sun, Jan 24, 2010 at 00:08:52 from 208.117.127.110

Walt sorry about the guy who had a man crush on you. But seriously do you blame him? Also the weather was crap... but we need the water so there ya go.

Sorry I missed seeing everyone. But glad you had fun without me.

From Burt on Sun, Jan 24, 2010 at 00:17:48 from 98.177.216.165

I'll take that guy out for you next time Walter. But it will have to be before the race because I wouldn't be able to catch him. Or I could jump from behind a bush. Socorro in spanish means aid/help. So I'll yell, "You need some socorro??" right before I flatten him.

From Jon on Sun, Jan 24, 2010 at 00:32:24 from 75.169.153.253

Nice job, man. But next time just start throwing your elbows more!

From Walter on Sun, Jan 24, 2010 at 04:10:28 from 24.10.169.110

James, yeah when I was talking to Steve at the finish, he had me laughing when he told me how Jose did that to him in Mesquite.

Clyde, I think he did it because I was getting so much attention from the ladies. haha funny story, right at the start, about .25 into the race, My neighbor lady was cheering me on and Dave Holt started making fun of me. Im pretty sure that started the Im going to take this pretty boy out in Jose. haha

Burt thats funny! You could definitely pants him at the starting line and Ill yell take that you soccoro! suck it soccoro! haha Oh my imagination is really going here.

Jon, if you wouldve run that with me and had those intimidating green shorts, he wouldnt have got a shot in. lol I need to do more training runs with you up there so I can learn how to run dirty. omg! You are so going to kick my butt. Well, you just have to do it on the street man! haha

From Samantha Dean-Howard on Sun, Jan 24, 2010 at 06:14:26 from 90.195.99.208

Hey walter I said on Facebook about my experiance but hey it didnt carry on with me, as a kid we used to run with our arms out in xcountry I tripped and trampled with spikes once too..... I feel flying over for your next race and bumping in myself off the road of course LOL

Way to go on a great race with bad conditions and I bet you were really tired from the new baby joy :)

From marion on Sun, Jan 24, 2010 at 11:35:21 from 71.213.120.94

Great race Walter! Bummer about the weather, but you know what they say about Utah, just wait and it will be different :) CONGRATULATIONS!

From AmberG on Sun, Jan 24, 2010 at 11:47:20 from 209.33.225.225

Great race Walter, and I'm just sitting here laughing at everyone's comments about your 'flailing friend who had a man crush on you' and I have nothing else to add, , , they've said it all! What an experience though, frustrating! Seriously, what is that all about? Nice run and congrats on a new baby too!

From RivertonPaul on Sun, Jan 24, 2010 at 11:49:09 from 97.161.34.43

Hilarious! Thanks Jose, I mean Walter.

From Walter on Sun, Jan 24, 2010 at 11:58:16 from 24.10.169.110

Sammy I went down and slept in a great bed and had the best sleep before the race. (selfish) I have had experiences like this before in Track also, never thought it would carry over into a half marathon. haha How do you get tired of a baby boy after having 3 girls! Impossible. But ill let you know how it goes. haha

Marion, too right you are. Its always when your vacationing or wanting a warm break from the snow too. lol

Amber, yes im glad I can look back and laugh. If I spoke Spanish I wouldve asked him if he was drunk or what the deal was. Thanks for providing 30 minutes of warm sun while I was down there. I wished I couldve stayed till today but my tired wife and baby boy needed me.

Paul, where the heck where you man! You couldve totally taken him out for me! haha

From Keith on Sun, Jan 24, 2010 at 11:58:46 from 174.52.17.177

Nice race Walter, Sounds like you had quite the run with your new best friend, I too enjoyed talking to you after the race, I am probably not going to run the winter series but i may do the winter half before Boston, I'm sure will see you around.

From jtshad on Sun, Jan 24, 2010 at 18:07:21 from 69.20.183.178

Great early season run my friend. What a nice guy, maybe he thought he was in a Nascar race...that was really uncalled for.

From Shimelle on Sun, Jan 24, 2010 at 20:10:16 from 75.162.234.148

BTW, you shoulda just sucker punched old Jose!:)

From Teena Marie on Sun, Jan 24, 2010 at 20:57:34 from 174.52.45.85

Awesome job there Walter James!!! Now let's see what you have in store for the rest of the year!!!

From Kelli on Sun, Jan 24, 2010 at 21:51:34 from 71.219.89.82

Great job Walter! The one thing I love about that course is being able to run it and be in the middle of the pack and STILL cheer on the winners as they fly by! That guy was stuck to you like glue when I saw you at about 12, WEIRDO!!!!!!

From Bec on Sun, Jan 24, 2010 at 21:58:55 from 76.23.55.210

Great race! Elbows guy? Interesting.

From Samantha Dean-Howard on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 05:16:58 from 78.32.130.9

Walter Yeah you wont get tired of the baby but the joy of having him will tire you out :) and you wouldnt even realise it ! I love baby boys when I see a baby boy I get broody but girls Nahhhhh :)

From jj on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 23:35:14 from 63.225.232.182

I wish I could claim that I was the Jose elbowing my way to beating Walter but unfortunately I can't claim that dubious honor. I am nowhere near that fast. Nope, that Jose is a brother from another mother.

Walter, next time punch him in the gut and have him chase you all the way to the finish. A surefire way to a PR!!

From Smooth on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 23:44:56 from 174.23.232.65

When I saw you flying by, you didn't look too happy, now I know why. What's with the road hogging dude! I would have done a Tonya Harding on him if I had known.

NICE race btw!!!

From Walter on Tue, Jan 26, 2010 at 00:11:38 from 24.10.169.110

Jeff, Thanks a lot. Its going to take an act to try and make it this year. I hope I dont push to hard.

Michelle, I was afraid if I punched Jose, he would retaliate. Besides im a lover not a fighter. Well, unless he wouldve gone farther.

Teena Marie, thanks and I hope you have a great year. Lets get that tape off your legs alright!

Kelli, I didnt like the mingling with other runners myself. It was a different perspective in a race I guess. Nice to be cheered on when I was on the last few miles.

Bec, where were you!? Ive seen you bench those weights and know you wouldve had a better chance against him. lol

Sammy, my gosh! Youve got me straight trippin'! All this English jibber jabber has my head a spinning!

JJ, you could totally do it! Im going to hand out my Carl Malone Elbow to the head next time! Just saying!

Smooth, hahahahah You were a jump in my step when you yelled at me! I think you shouldve been up closer to the front with all that energy you displayed!

From BlondeRunner on Tue, Jan 26, 2010 at 10:15:41 from 69.3.54.133

Wow - that is crazy to have a guy do that...kinda strange. BTW - I think I ran with Steve Sumsion at the U (I ran for them my freshman year).

From Walter on Tue, Jan 26, 2010 at 10:32:57 from 68.171.235.113

Lora, yes. He ran for the U and is an amazing runner. For him to just come out and run a 1.15 without trainingThe past 6 years blows my freakin mind. He's 39 years old. Btw when I win the lottery, the U will have its running program again.

From missy on Tue, Jan 26, 2010 at 14:20:01 from 71.35.244.238

Hi Walty, started making a comment for you the other day but got distracted in my house..must have adhd or something..lol...

You know me tho I have a reaaaally hot temper for anyone who is not using their manners...If We are ever at the same race and Jose is there..I'm gonna pants him at the Race start and run and hide..you cover for me? Lol.

Nice speedy race in my eyes!

Oh, what is your next race Walt?

From Walter on Tue, Jan 26, 2010 at 23:11:38 from 24.10.169.110

Missy sippy! Its on! I have always wanted to do a few pranks to other runners. haha It would make me run faster! A fear of dying sort of run! lol

From Ericka on Wed, Jan 27, 2010 at 15:19:40 from 63.248.84.45

Sounds like elbows was just wanting you give you an experience to make this race memorable. I'm sure it will be. Nice racin Walter!

From Ericka on Wed, Jan 27, 2010 at 15:51:17 from 63.248.84.45

I just saw a pic of you from the start.. You look like a cold, lost little kid

From Walter on Wed, Jan 27, 2010 at 20:28:58 from 24.10.169.110

Ericka! Oh my fiddlers fart! a cold, lost little kid huh? I resemble that! After all I still have my high School body. haha Why did you post that pic now Burt is going to desicrate me!

Burt, remember all those nice things I said about you right! you arent a grudge holder are you? If I was a scriptorian, I would insert some do unto others... or something. Be nice!

From JD on Wed, Jan 27, 2010 at 20:39:07 from 209.183.51.43

What is the origin of that "fiddlers fart" phrase? It cracks me up every time I see it!

Excellent performance at the half BTW.

From missy on Wed, Jan 27, 2010 at 21:33:11 from 70.56.98.145

Checked out your Starting Line Pix Walter! :) You look great..ELITE! I'm looking at the people around you thinking..UM..why the hell are They at the start?! They look like they can run Maybe 4 minutes per mile slower than the top runners..

From Walter on Wed, Jan 27, 2010 at 22:08:16 from 24.10.169.110

JD, You know im not exactly sure where I heard it or if I can claim it as something I came up with but I like descriptive phrases as you can see and lines that stick in my head. lol

Missy poo, I looked damn cold and yeah I think I might of been a little confused when a 200 lb. guy was posing next to me at the start line. Sometimes I feel like a prima donna pushing my way to the start. lol But after the first 200 meters you get to see who the ones at the front really are. Ive run a few races like Ogden marathon where I didnt know or see any runners at the start and then immediately they came from a few rows back. lol I just hope I dont stand in front of someone faster than me.

From Burt on Wed, Jan 27, 2010 at 22:44:18 from 98.177.216.165

It won't hurt too bad Walter. But hey. I did find a picture of you as a wee young lad. You do look cold and lost in your own little world. Hope you don't mind I posted it on my blog.

From Walter on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 20:51:20 from 24.10.169.110

Thanks for that Burt. What do you do for a living again you nerd? haha your lucky my work doesnt have a computer that I can doodle all day on!

From Burt on Thu, Jan 28, 2010 at 23:05:12 from 98.177.216.165

That's it. I'm a professional nerd. And let me tell you there's dang good money in it.

From Walter on Sat, Jan 30, 2010 at 12:32:50 from 24.10.169.110

Yeah Burt, maybe I should go back to school and give you some competition!

From missy on Sun, Jan 31, 2010 at 21:32:33 from 70.56.98.145

Thats funny Walter..That guy totally looked like he was Posing! Well Walter don't you worry, You belong at the front. :)

From Walter on Mon, Feb 01, 2010 at 08:09:18 from 24.10.169.110

I remember the first race I ran about 6 years ago when I got back into running. I was so intimidated by the front so i went back into the middle and I ended up taking 20th overall and had to fight my way through the crowd. lol
