I havnt been running the past two days because of some abdomen pain.  I went to a doctor today and they told me I had a hernia.  I have to meet with a surgeon on thursday at 10 am and I will let you all know what is up.  If they do surgery, I will be out close to a month.  Im going to ask if I can get away with putting it off until the winter and then doing it. Ive never had problems with my body before, Ive always been in a laboring position and my body is starting to catch up with me.   I did have a funny thing happen when I went in to the doctor, the nurse took my weight and started shaking her head.  132! Then I told her my cell phone probably weighed close to a pound. lol She then took my pulse and couldnt believe it. It was 44!  I asked her what the matter was and she told me my pulse was freakishly low.  I laughed as she left the room and could hear her talking to my doctor.  When my doctor opened the door, she was still talking to the nurse and said "he's a freak of nature that runs too much and it wasnt anything to worry about."  I asked her as she came into the room if I blew her nurse away and she said "yeah you freak!"  I will keep you all posted.

Dang! Get that thing taken care of so you can work, live, and run without pain.

From Cal on Tue, Jul 08, 2008 at 19:34:02

I've been living with ab pain for several weeks. What were your specific symptoms?

From walter on Tue, Jul 08, 2008 at 19:37:06

The biggest symptom was swelling and pain.

From Jody on Tue, Jul 08, 2008 at 20:39:50

I am sorry to hear that! I am not sure if they will let you post pone but beg and plead your case the best you can.

From Walter on Wed, Jul 09, 2008 at 09:08:21

I know Jody, I'll beg my case out and see what I can do. Im sick of every time I get my times down, something happens to me.

From Jody on Wed, Jul 09, 2008 at 09:24:05

I feel for you! I am experiencing the same frustration right now. I am finally starting to get back to where I was before I was injured and all of a sudden all the nagging little injuries are starting all over again. Hopefully I will be smarter this time and my body will be stronger. Glad to see you were able to get out today.

From Walter on Wed, Jul 09, 2008 at 09:29:55

I swear when I get nagging injuries one after the other I just force myself to run and see if I cant get rid of them. Tons of stretching and ice.

From jtshad on Wed, Jul 09, 2008 at 09:30:39

Sorry to hear about the hernia. Do what is best for you in the long run, I don't know if trying to train thru a hernia is a good idea or not.

Let us know what the prognosis is...you freak! :-) How can you be at 132? Eat more!!!

From cody on Wed, Jul 09, 2008 at 10:13:01

You freak!

I had a hernia a few years ago and got it fixed. They put that mesh patch in. The only problem is that it is bulging again, but now on both sides. The doctor left it up to me to decide what to do about it. Hopefully, you can do the same. Now, if it is at a dangerous state or if you have pain while working I would recommend doing it. You will heal pretty quick. It seems to be worse than mine if it bothers you enough to not run. It seems the best plan would be to get it fixed. But then you have to be careful not to re-injure it like I did. Best of luck!

From Adam RW on Wed, Jul 09, 2008 at 13:13:59

I hope everything works out for the best. Did your fast mile yesterday aggravate it? If not, hopefully that is a good sign.

From Adam RW on Wed, Jul 09, 2008 at 13:14:21

I meant fast mile this morning (Wed)...

From Jon on Wed, Jul 09, 2008 at 13:18:07

Get better soon, no matter what you do... after all, TOU 1/2 wouldn't be the same without you!

From James on Wed, Jul 09, 2008 at 13:54:35

Bummer about the hernia. Too much heavy lifting from work? Hope everything works out!

From Walter on Wed, Jul 09, 2008 at 18:04:34

Jeff- I know, take the place of my father wont you!? Ill be carefull.

Cody-See what happens when you mix concrete with extreme running and try to keep up with a cyclist going down a canyon!? Ill know tommorrow what my options are.

Adam--My fast mile didnt aggravate it thats why Im thinking of maybe letting it go for a bit, but tommorrow will tell what I should do when I meet with the surgeon.

Jon--Im never going to win TOU 1/2 am I? something or someone always seems to get in my way.

James--Im going to be on the track at 5:30 tommorrow to help my wife and Danielle with some speed work. I will take it easy. The Hernia is from work because I dont even feel it when I run. It was a little sore after the 15k but I did work hard the day before lifting buckets of concrete and wilbarrowing and pushing mud around and thats when it was hurting. My run this morning didnt really aggravate it.

From Chad on Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 11:17:44

Walter,

Really sorry to hear about the hernia. I'm sure you'll bounce back quickly, no matter what treatment you choose.

If you do go into surgery, maybe you should have them see if they can dig out the remaining bits of the branch that impaled your shoulder in that bike wreck a few years ago :)

Good luck man, you'll be back.

From Walter on Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 16:56:07

Hey chad, thats a good idea about the branch. I talked to the doctor today and he said I need surgery on both sides and that its not horrible right now and I may get away with waiting a couple of months. It all depends on my pain. Its really weird, I thought overweight people got those but he informed me that it wasnt so. Just unlucky people. Why me why now why!? jk lol Hey I saw your debut on youtube. We all need to bring our cam corders next time. Its nice to see you guys kickin butt, the way you guys kicked butt, I was suprised we were ahead of you. It was cool to see whenever you guys passed someone. You were all a blur! amazing!
