I met up at the top and got my pacers in order and lined up and ready. I only had 5 minutes to myself so I started doing a few sprints to get my legs going. The race started on time and we were off. I pushed the pace fast because I knew how steep it was for the first mile. There was a kid in board shorts leading us the first mile. He looked awesome and strong so I didnt question him. Our first mile was 5:03. Board shorts kid dropped back and it was just Steve Anderson and I all by ourselves. We gave each other High fives and said "To Masters!" We hit mile 2 at 5:11. I was feeling out of breath a bit. 3rd mile was 5.24, 4th was 5:07. Steve pulled away from me at this point. 5 was 5:01 (Last year I hit 6-4:50's in a row on this canyon) Not today. 6 was 4:54, 7 was 5:16. 8-5:34. I could start seeing Steve after letting him get 300 yards on me in the canyon. I was ever so slowly reeling him in. 9-5:53. I had a hard time on this mile. It had some up hill and I knew that this was the mile to catch Steve. As I got to the top of the hill, I didnt get much on him. 10-5:47. I felt comfortable at this pace and knew I wouldnt win unless I started to push it at this point. I started a bit harder to catch Steve and right before mile 11 he ran off the course, I yelled but he didnt hear me. I told the 3 volunteers to go drive and get him. I had a lot of emotions go through my head at this point as you could image. Yes Im in 1st! Wait, I need to get him. What should I do? I felt guilty for the next mile as I comtiplated going back.  I really wanted to break 1:10 but my legs were heavy and tight. I hit mile 11 at 59:50 and new Id have to put in two 5 flat miles. I messed my watch up at this point but new I was fading quick especially with nobody in site behind me. I really feel I couldve got in the 1:10 range for sure with Steve pushing me. I gave up. I ended up winning and got the trip to Zermatt and a Fruit basket. I defended my title in unexpected circumstances.  My Pacers did awesome! Its such a great feeling to watch people come up to my pacers and thank them for helping them PR! Seriously!

Great job! Way to represent us old guys!

To Masters Tom!

Thanks Jeff!

That moment coming down the canyon when we dropped all those young guys was one of the coolest running moments Ive had. good times! And for the record, I didn't run off course. :-) You are running on a main street and the course takes a 90 and is not coned off? i'm never running in front again..

From Walter on Sat, Jun 23, 2012 at 13:50:22 from 97.162.189.133

Steve Prefontaine Anderson, you dominated the canyon. I'm calling it Steve's canyon from now on.

From Tara on Sat, Jun 23, 2012 at 13:59:02 from 75.169.155.164

Sheesh! Running off course has been a curse lately. Good thing you stayed on today. Poor Steve. Nice work Walter! Okay, where or what is Zermatt?

From Walter on Sat, Jun 23, 2012 at 14:02:33 from 24.2.69.110

Zermatt is a quaint euro style village up near Heber. It's really nice and a good getaway.

Way to go Walter!

Great race, Walter! I contemplated running up the canyon from my home to watch you go blazing by. I bet it felt so cool for you and Steve to watch the young bucks fade out.

From Walter on Sat, Jun 23, 2012 at 16:37:01 from 24.2.69.110

Thanks Jake!

Scott, you totally shouldve! Steve may not have fallen from the course if you did.

Nice job Walt. That's smokin!

From Walter on Sat, Jun 23, 2012 at 17:38:27 from 97.162.189.133

Thanks Clyde! It's a great course.

That's probably about enough comments about off course running

From Walter on Sat, Jun 23, 2012 at 21:33:24 from 97.163.94.34

Steve, I guarantee if you ran this last year we both would've broke the 1:10 mark. The conditions were better last year and I didn't have anyone to push me hard like this year.

From MarkP on Sat, Jun 23, 2012 at 21:58:21 from 75.162.238.222

Great job Walter. I'm glad Steve threw you a bone!

From Walter on Sat, Jun 23, 2012 at 22:00:49 from 97.163.94.34

Mark, that's twice in a row he has and once for Dennis Simonitis

Good job old man.

From James on Sun, Jun 24, 2012 at 16:56:08 from 24.199.6.74

Nice win! Paul is the guy I know who would have stopped and waited!:)

From Walter on Sun, Jun 24, 2012 at 18:44:39 from 97.149.134.237

James H, those are fighting words! If Steve can still run that fast than so can I. Funny thing he told me after the race that he thought if I could run this fast than so could he. Lol

James, Paul's UVM finish was my first thought that came into my head if the Utah State runners weren't behind me I would've. He actually started catching me even after he turned around and came back.

From Mattrow on Mon, Jun 25, 2012 at 12:52:26 from 132.3.57.68

Good race. Let me know if you need another pacer.

From Walter on Mon, Jun 25, 2012 at 13:08:06 from 97.163.149.208

Matt, I need a 1:35 pacer for TOU Half on aug. 25th. I need two pacers for 1:40 in Bryce Half on July 14th. And two pacers for 3:00 in Bryce half as well.

From Mattrow on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 07:26:13 from 132.3.57.68

I would love to be a pacer, but my wife will be receiving her black belt on July 14th, and I am planning on racing TOU Half. It would be bad if I missed watching my wife get her black belt.

From Walter on Wed, Jun 27, 2012 at 09:26:55 from 97.163.104.32

Matt, if you miss your wife's black belt, she will kick your white arse!

You are a beast among men. Congrats on the win.
