Ok Im home so I can do a quick write up.   I went into this race with one goal and that was to beat the natorious Pepe Peterson.  I had a strategy from running this race and that was to go as hard as I could out  and let the steep downhill at mile two push me to a 5 or faster pace mile. I started and was running side by side to Pepe and he dropped back after a half mile and I was all alone besides a younger guy who got behind me about mile 1 to draft from the head wind we got. Once I hit mile 2 it was where I wanted to be. Hitting 4:58-5:08 pace till mile 6. I didnt hear anyone behind me at all.  At mile 7 I counted to 28 seconds until some bystanders clapped for me till they clapped again. Kind of tricky in my book. I was a bit worried at that point. I was fading to a 5:40 pace and couldnt seem to go any faster even with the down hill parts that came up. At mile 9 I was down to about 10 seconds ahead of Pepe. This worried me as I was having stomach issues. I almost had to stop at mile ten because it was burning. I knew if I stopped Id lose the race so I kept on pushing. Mile 11 and 12 were both 5:40 pace and I knew I had to push a 5:30 or better on my last mile so I gave it all I got. At mile 12.6 I turned around and saw that I had about .10 mile lead on Pepe but knew he was a strong finisher so I set it in my head to push as hard as possible on the last turn in and stayed ahead of him. He pushed me hard! I finished about 20 seconds ahead of him. He is quite the competitor.  I talked to him for a while afterward and he wants a showdown in SGM.  I will have to see. I really want to do the Twin Cities so either race will be competition.  I ended up with $500.00 bucks which is about 2-3 days of concrete work so I will take it!

My pacers did an amazingly great job helping 10 pace times and tons of compliments were given which is what I live for! Its so fun!

@Scott, its always good to come home with more money then you left. lol

@JamesH, He was pretty upset. He told me after that "when you win you learn nothing. When you lose you learn a lot and today I learned a lot and wont let it happen again." Yikes! I think I stirred up the bees nest!

@Clyde, I was talking to Steve afterward and told him how I'll bet you and Dave and Logan were kicking yourselves. I guess we will have to wait another day for our showdown. Lol

Cool talking to you about this one. You are the man this summer!

The old man

From Walter on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 15:42:02 from 97.36.148.7

Tell me and can't beat you and I will. Show me I can beat you and I'll be unstoppable. Or something clever like that.

From MarkP on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 17:23:49 from 75.162.122.164

Great job, but Pepe owns SGM. It would be a tough race!

From Holt on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 17:32:55 from 67.2.240.4

There might be a little of that! Especially since my watch died and I could have used some $ to get a new one.

From Walter on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 17:38:08 from 24.2.69.110

Mark, too right you are! Or are you coercing me into beating him? :) here is the scenario, I do SGM and go for the Masters win to Japan, or I go to Twin Cities which had similar time as Pepe except a tougher course for the Masters $10,000 dollar win. I think my odds are SGM. Lol I at least got into his head and believe you me, you don't have to better your time if they think you can beat them. You just have to stay in their mind and let them conform to you. I have to get that marathon length out of my head. If I can run a 1:10-1:12 half on these downhill courses I should be able to break that 2:30 marathon mark. Can I do it? Yes! I know I can.

From Walter on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 17:41:13 from 24.2.69.110

Dave, I really thought you'd be there. It would have been fun. The last half I ran with you was Bryce a few years ago.

From MarkP on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 17:43:20 from 75.162.122.164

Pepe is your new arch nemesis since you have defeated He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. LOL!

From Steve on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 17:55:29 from 66.87.66.154

You'll need 2:20 for Twin, that's what Mbarack is running this year. Lokken is 2:23. Times are changing for masters. SGM is a great race, but Twin is where the competition will be.

From Walter on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 18:01:04 from 24.2.69.110

Mark, I hope Im wearing White! I dont mind being the Dark Horse though.

Steve, I thought it was a 2:27. That scares the sweet shitake out of me! There are 40+ year olds that can do that? :) We need to run more. Quit our jobs, get serious. lol

From RileyCook on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 18:13:05 from 96.41.211.97

Congrats on the win Walter and on the $500!

From Walter on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 18:14:38 from 24.2.69.110

Thanks Riley. Was that you I was talking to at the first few miles of UVM?

From RileyCook on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 18:31:23 from 96.41.211.97

No that was Bryant Jensen. I was the one in red just in front of you two. Then Bryant worked up to me by five or so and we started working together.

From Steve on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 18:32:57 from 66.87.66.154

:-) They are the new targets, the ones that motivate my running right now. Read Jake's race report on the US Half Marathon Championships. Kevin beat him (barely, I think Jake's a stronger runner) with around a 65 half. On an honest course. His 10k is near a 28. Lokken works full time as a roofer. Any real half win will take a 66 nationally as a Master and a full is coming close to 2:19. Just means it's time to start thinking like an athlete and not Master. I for one, think you have it in you to run the same speed. I don't give a $%&@ about numbers predicting future performance.

From Walter on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 18:49:57 from 24.2.69.110

@ Riley ok I gotcha.

@ Steve, when my numbers hit on that powrrball I swear to you that we can run full time and let the world see what we've got. :)

From jtshad on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 21:50:28 from 69.20.183.178

TCM is a way different course than SGM and the competitors there are tough. Tracy is very talented, along with some of the other top old guys. When I ran it in 2008, Dennis won it with a 2:27ish in some of the worst running conditions I have ever been in (similar to SGM that year...but worse!). Getting to that next level...hmmm.

From josse on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 22:16:00 from 70.196.202.103

Way to use your "focus" powers, I'm still trying to figure that out:) great job Walter!

From JPark on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 23:18:07 from 174.52.34.169

Terrific race Walter!...Looks like you've really got your mojo flowing right now? Are you doing Timp 1/2 this year?

From Walter on Mon, Jul 16, 2012 at 23:24:29 from 97.36.148.7

Josse, yes! Just like we talked in practice. :)

Justin, Rumor has it. I can honestly say that race director is pretty far out there asking People to fill out a survey to see how they will be assigned a bus time. I'm not going to even respond to that one. He's a froot loop.
