I came into this race with low expectations. My body is a mess and my miles for the week were horrid. Maybe I needed a break. It was about 35 degrees st the start. I started out comfortable and mile one was 5.23. I felt like a million bucks and kept it easy. I was in 7th position behind BJ Christiansen. Mile 2 was 55.41 still feeling good. 3 was 5.39, 4 was 5.52. I saw BJ make a surge and pass Albert Wint and a couple guys came up on me and I felt good so I stayed with them. 5 was 5.43. 6 was 5.38. I was getting close to Albert now. 7 was missed on my watch. I pased Albert and had another runner with me. Mile 8 was 5.54 9 was 5.51. This was the hill and I got into 6th place. We then got to the top and came down and Albert and the other runner surged ahead of me about 100 feet. I thougt in my mind I could catch them on the flat last 2 miles because every up or flat I was gapping these guys and down hill they caught me and passed me. 10 was 6.01. Made it out of the Canyon. 11 was 5.49. Albert was fading and I wanted to wait till mile 12 to pass him but when someone is struggling, that's when you make your move. I pased him and tried to focus on form. Now I am a target for him. 12th mile was 5.51. No way I could catch the guy in front of me so I focused on not letting Albert get me. 13 was 5.48 and I made it to the shoot and peopl were going crazy because Albert was Pourin it on. I got on my tip toes and pushed it on in for 7th place. Its beautiful down here and we will take in the scenery today.

:) Wow That is crazy fast Walter!!! Makes me feel ill thinking about what that would feel like...haha...1st in age division is awesome Walter. :D Way better than 2nd. I think anyhow...Very impressed with your running ability! :)

From Paul on Sun, Mar 21, 2010 at 15:16:01 from 174.23.180.177

Nice race. Top 10 is always really good at that race; the highest I ever finished was 6th, and you beat my best time too. ;-) Dont' worry, we'll get your mileage up a little bit and consistent, but you don't seem to need a ton of mileage to thrive. Good job.

From Smooth on Sun, Mar 21, 2010 at 15:40:16 from 174.23.198.220

CONGRATS on taking 1st! EXCELLENT performance and WAY to overtake Albert! AWESOME speed!!! :)

Wow, nice job Walter, especially holding off Albert!

From Walter on Sun, Mar 21, 2010 at 19:47:23 from 24.10.169.110

Amber, Thanks its a nice getaway. By the way, I saw your pick in a running magazine with Nick Mccoombs from Painters half and got a kick out of the break down of running apparel when it lists Nicks watch he quotes, "a cheap watch I bought at a grocery storte. lol High tech!

Missy, I feel good about my age group and hope to be able to get quicker too. Thanks.

Paul, I have always had a hard time on this course. Its like the last 13 miles of Boston. But I did feel pretty good in this race like I could have pushed harder.

Smooth, Thanks. Will you be at Riverton next Saturday?

From Walter on Sun, Mar 21, 2010 at 19:50:26 from 24.10.169.110

Jon, Albert is a great runner. He surged a lot in this race. He started out a bit fast I think. It took me a while to catch him. Then he wouldnt let me pull away at all. He made a huge push with a 19 year old that finished so strong. He is from Moab too.

From Smooth on Sun, Mar 21, 2010 at 19:54:04 from 174.23.198.220

No, I won't be at Riverton next Sat. Have to go to Conference Center w/ the hubs and the YW's ALL DAY!!! Bleh!

Nice run! Way to push it to the very end.

“I found that if you have a goal, that you might not reach it. But if you don’t have one, then you are never disappointed. And I gotta tell ya… it feels phenomenal.”

From Walter on Sun, Mar 21, 2010 at 20:54:27 from 24.10.169.110

Smooth, Ill probably see you in Boston then.

Melody, Thanks. Was there a lot of runners there or what? I couldnt find anybody at the top. If I saw you, it wouldve been out of sure luck. lol

Burt, I agree. Some of my best marathons or races are when I go in with a goal. Dont really care about how I run, than PR or do well past my goals. It is what keeps us looking forward to the next race!

You sure are speedy. Congratulations on the age division win.

I saw someone in an FRB singlet. Was that you?

From Walter on Sun, Mar 21, 2010 at 23:24:08 from 24.10.169.110

Burt, did I say that at Del Sol last year? lol Im guessing Pre?

Carolyn, There was 3 or 4 of us there. I had a great time.

From Superfly on Sun, Mar 21, 2010 at 23:26:05 from 208.117.127.110

Good race Walt. You should be sitting pretty good with all these solid races under your belt. As the weather warms your miles will come up too.

From Maurine/Miles on Sun, Mar 21, 2010 at 23:32:56 from 97.117.73.228

Good job, Walter. Sounds like you pushed pretty hard in the race.

From Matt on Sun, Mar 21, 2010 at 23:43:23 from 76.23.0.103

Walter,

Congrats on a great race. It was nice to finally meet you in person. I am doing a couple time comparisons and wanted to ask you. Do you think this course is easier or harder then Painters and Riverton? Just try to gauge my goals for next week and trying to figure how much I am improving as opposed to course getting easier. I was nice to actully be able to keep you in view for 4 miles you are inspiring.

From Walter on Mon, Mar 22, 2010 at 00:03:36 from 24.10.169.110

Clyde, Thanks my man. I have Boston in 4 weeks. ugg

Maurine, thnak you.

Matt, great meeting you also up there in the cold. I shaved 40 seconds off on Riverton with a horrible head wind for 6 miles. I think Riverton is easier.

From Holt on Mon, Mar 22, 2010 at 09:44:54 from 204.113.55.41

Good job Walter - you can always pull out a great race!

Nice battle! Thats how it comes down with Albert at the end. Tough cookie if he is with you at the finish.

Nice work Walter! Especially coming off a bad week, but then again you ARE the amazing Walter...would we expect any less?? New hardware and fame - No surprises there! :)

Dodgeball.

From Steve on Fri, Mar 26, 2010 at 13:47:46 from 64.134.158.203

Nice pace on that race, I've always wanted to run that half. Isn't it wierd how some days you are so full of energy and another you have nothing. I swear there is no logic that explains it at times. Ready for the Striders half?
