I woke up at an insane early hour this morning and went to the start line of the Marathon. It was 28 degrees. I had a singlet on and shorts. I started the race out fast but comfortable because of the cold. Mile 1:5.15, 2: 5.45, 3: 5.39, 4: 5.39, 5: 5.39, 6: 5.40, 7: 5.45, 8: 5.49, 9: 5.59, 10: 5.53, 11: 6.09, 12: 6.04, 13: 6.07, 14: 5.56, 15: 6.35, 16: 7.25, 17: 6.08, 18: 5.49, 19: 5.49, 20: 5.59, 21: ,6.26, 22: 6.27, 23: 5.53, 24: 6.38, 25: 6.47, 26: 7.27, 26.2: 3.01

I felt pretty good running this up till the hill at mile 14. I had to stop at mile 16 for a potti break that took me out of 3rd place to 5th place. When I came out of the porta potti, Tim had just passed and It took me a good .25 mile to catch him, we ran together for about a mile then I wanted to see if I could catch the 3rd place guy.  I was working hard maybe to hard and i burned myself out by mile 20. I felt perfectly fine at mile 19 then mile 20 I was in a complete different state of mind. I was fatigued and was fighting every mile from then on. The park trail was frustrating as I was all by myself and had to yell to the slower half marathon walkers that took the entire path up. I really hate that. It didnt slow me down much, but did mess with my pshychy. I had to stop for a drink which by the way gagged me severly because it had a strong hose taste to it. even the powerade had the hose taste to me. I gagged every time i had to drink. that was really the only thing i could complain about. I enjoyed the weather, not much wind, and the Jamba Juice at the end.

Dude I hear you on the water. I was thinking they were probably taking it straight from the lake when we were up by Eden. I was getting annoyed with some guys on bikes that were pacing a runner right by me, they kept speeding up then turning around and coming back, I finally yelled out loud at one girl on a bike that I was done dealing with bikes around me and she took off. I guess that was my biggest complaint, along with dodging past all the walkers on the trail.

From jtshad on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 00:06:07 from 69.20.133.32

Congrats on a solid time and great place...4th rocks! Great job you racing freak!

From Walter on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 00:09:05 from 76.27.15.208

Dustin, there were a few cops on motorcycles that kept doing that to me also. The race is pretty well organized but Red Powerade just sucks!

From cody on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 00:41:40 from 67.161.250.22

Nice Job Walter! 4th overall is a very solid place. Very good pace over the middle tough miles!

From josse t on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 01:40:02 from 70.193.161.130

Great job on the race Walter.

Way to go Walter - good racing!

From Nancy on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 09:17:35 from 76.27.11.127

Wow, great race Walter. I thought the water was sick also. I had my own water in my bottle, but when I finished the last swallow I stopped at the next stop and dumped their water in my bottle. Big mistake. The water was so sick I couldn't even drink it. The next stop I dumped it out and filled my bottle with gater aid.

From Bill Mandler on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 09:58:10 from 24.119.13.42

Nice race!!! I thought the water tasted funny too. I wonder where they got it?

From Walter on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 14:35:34 from 76.27.15.208

Jeff, im going to hit a low 2:30 this year if it kills me! Whens your next race?

Cody, I had those middle miles memorized from all those Winter races up there! lol

Josse T, it was fun seeing you toughing it out!

Dave, Thanks. I do like the first 23 miles of that race. I wished it ended at mile 23. haha

Nancy, Misty told me she saw some Coke cans at mile 21 or 23 that they were giving out. I really would have gulped one down there if I wouldve known. I wouldve been happier at least! lol

Bill, Misty told me she saw them pouring it out of these plastic things. I think they were dipping them into Pineview reservoir.

cgbooth, ditto on the water. Very nasty!

Bec, thank you. I cant wait till your back at it!

Kelli, you can call me Awesome, but remember when you point at me three fingers are pointing back at you! You have to feel good about that yesterday.

Smooth! I didnt know you were going up there. What a great day huh?

Mike, I wished I wouldve got the division win at SGM then I wouldnt have to deal with being a beggar! Itd be like i lived down there.

Paul, I love running. Its my passion! I can see those people around me that feel the same and befriend you all! Great run yesterday!

From Walter on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 14:37:04 from 76.27.15.208

Paul, Im thinking of doing TOU for sure even if i can get into SGM. I will do it competitively and go for my PR with you guys up there.

4th place? Awesome job, even if the water tasted like crap. And it's good there wasn't that nasty headwind. Good work, and we'll see you at TOU. Are you doing any races before then? Oh wait, this is Walter- are there any races you AREN'T doing before then?

From Walter on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 16:43:03 from 76.27.15.208

Adam, thanks alot.

Teena, youll be the same when you get back. mark my words. look at Kelli!

Jon, Im doing Bryce half, Provo half, TOU half, Bear lake half. its a half year for me!

I would feel awesome if I could WALK!

From Adam RW on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 17:02:42 from 155.101.241.125

Walter, You forgot about the SL half... :)

From Michelle N. on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 17:56:24 from 75.162.247.50

Woohoo! Did ya hear me screaming for you at the finish line? You are awesome! You got your long term goal:) Oh, and I hear ya about the hose taste. I ran Julie in and grabbed a drink of powerade and about spit it out. Nasty! Anyway, I'm so impressed and you are going to have an awesome summer if you are running this strong, this early.

From Michelle N. on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 18:00:44 from 75.162.247.50

Okay, ignore my comment about the long term goal. I saw Sasha running along at mile 25 1/2 about 3:10 into the race and thought, uh oh! Well, I just looked at his report and he did the half. Sorry, you'll have to work on that for the fall:)

From RAD on Sun, May 17, 2009 at 18:58:17 from 67.166.99.8

Nice job speedy gonzales! Funny, I never even noticed anything about the water - I guess I must've really been thirsty. Well, then again I do live in Herriman, our water rivals Magna!!

From Walter on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 01:03:07 from 76.27.15.208

Kelli, i actually felt fine after and could walk without pain. Today, not so much. lol

Adam, isnt that the one that put you out of commission? lol I may do that one. I think its the same time as TOU.

Michelle, I did hear you screaming in my tired state of mind. lol

Rachel, it was like drinking right from the lake. it was nasty. I almost threw up at a couple of the stations. in fact Tim ( the guy that came in 5th) was next to me at mile 16 and i swore after i drank it and asked me if I was going to throw up. lol haha

From Adam RW on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 02:04:37 from 155.101.241.125

No more likely it was Provo but it was mostly bad timing and judgment on my part. I like SL because it is the first and only solo SLC race I've won and have run it each year since I've been here.

From nfroerer on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 09:49:48 from 67.128.137.180

Awesome Race! Here you on the water - I stopped drinking it and started pouring it over me.. Ya I noticed they were painting mile markers on the road one day and the next they had sprayed that over and painted new ones... Not knowing if they could make the underpass at washington was probably playing with them a bit. Keep up the good work I fastblog stalk your posts...

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 09:56:55 from 71.229.164.25

Great job, Walter. You don't need to come to Colorado for the altitude. You're freakin' fast already.

I think we all hated the water.

From Julie on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 11:19:39 from 71.32.224.25

Awesome job Walter. I can't wait to hear all about it at running group.

From Jen on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 12:35:44 from 71.219.143.248

Congratulations on the 4th place finish (i.e., you are one fast runner)!!!

From Burt on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 16:27:15 from 68.76.197.194

For someone who works construction, you should be used to drinking out of a hose. What are you complaining about? Okay, I'm about to say something embarrassing. When I got back from my mission, I craved three things; root beer, taco bell, and hose water. LOL. Maybe I was pregnant.

On the serious side, great job. I looked at the results on-line, and they suck. You're listed as 16th place! Who won? Seth Wold?

From Walter on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 19:50:42 from 76.27.15.208

Nfroerer, yeah it was messed up for sure on the distance. its nice to be stalked. lol maybe? hmmm

Carolyn, You guys are used to crystal mountain spring water. I think they recycled this water out of the great salt lake.

Julie, i cant wait to try and run tomorrow.

Jen, its amazing how much time you shave off when you push yourself each race.

Rossy, thanks for the support. Ill look you up here in a minute.

Thats funny you said that Burt someone else told me they liked the taste of hose water too. I get mad at my guys when they use someones hose to fill up our water jug for work. yuck So im 16th overall huh?

probably all those half marathon runners messing up our finish. They need to do something about that.

From Burt on Mon, May 18, 2009 at 20:21:01 from 68.76.197.194

Congrats on a great race. If you ask me this is the most deceptive Marathon in the state. Th e running at high elev. the quick drop. You did awesome.

From Walter on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 13:26:54 from 76.27.15.208

Ericka, let the games begin.... lol Do you dance by the pale of the moonlight? I ask that of all my prey. (Batman) This town needs an enema!

Matt, all marathons are deceptive. haha Im thinking the TOU marathon is doable for me too this year.

From Matt on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 13:34:31 from 65.121.71.253

I am going to do TOU as well but I have promised my wife on your advice to run it with her no matter how slow she goes. It is her 1st Marathon. Should be a good long run before SGM.

From Walter on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 16:47:44 from 76.27.15.208

Thats a great plan! I was going to do that last year with a friend but wanted to make a super big impression on SGM and it ended up being the worst condition I had run in.

From Kelli on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 16:52:55 from 71.219.85.34

From Walter on Tue, May 19, 2009 at 22:19:17 from 76.27.15.208

Kelli shhhh geesh. Im kidding. I have got the worst pain in my right Achilles tendon. Ive had issues with it before and i really hammered it in Ogden. Also my lower back is killing me lately and i was going to try to take some days off to heal.

Seth, thanks alot! You are an amazing runner. I felt really good this time and wanted to see how far I could push my pace with you and Nick. Some day soon I hope. My first mile was a 5:15 which didnt seem like I was going that fast but I dropped back almost scared to try. Ive got to get that fear of going for it out of my mind.
