Went up to Dee Events center and it was 22 degrees when I got there. I was shocked at how cold it was only 45 miles north of us.  I did a warm up and lined up behind these girls who would not let me get to the front. At the last second I sort of pushed my way by them and then took off. I was behind Ben and another runner for the first half mile up hill and then it started to level off and Steve made a huge push and got Ben running faster. my first mile was 5:37 which is ok because we didnt really push hard up the hill. I was in 3rd place at this point and Steve and Ben were just blasting down the hill. Mile two I did a 5:08 and they were gapping me. Unbelievable! I talked to Steve and he said they did a 4:40 mile on the second mile. ugg! Mile 3 Ben passed Steve at this point and looked real strong. I did a 5:40 with some ups and downs but gradual ups. Steve started fading from Ben at this point and I was gaining on him. Mile 4, 5:52 and I was fading and the pack of runners behind me started gaining. Mile 5, 6:31. This is the oh so famous hill I like to call 'bastard hill' Im not gonna lie when I say its close to 10% grade for about 1/4 mile and the rest isnt as steep but still bastard like! I was happy to see a 6:31 pace at this time. I did pass Steve just before mile 5 and tried to get my legs to accelerate. It was hard. at 1/2 mile to go I peeked back and saw a runner hot on my back and started to push as hard as I could with some nice downhill to the Dee events center. I beat him only by 12 seconds so he was a downhill runner. Mile 6 was a 6:30 time and I finished in 36:30. Ben beat the course record in 35:02 and did great! Im glad this race is behind me. One more hard race to go. Im trying to decide if its smart to do it this year one week before Moab half. I am known for my insanity though. We will see!

Nice work Walter! Believe it or not it's that kind of race that is really going to help make you stronger. Hills and more hills right?

From Walter on Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 12:50:15 from 24.10.169.110

yes Steve. I need this badly for Boston. Hey Will you give me your work schedule so I can come run with you when i can? I really need to run with you speed demons.

From steve ash on Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 12:50:39 from 174.52.96.106

Is it possible to even get in the Moab half still? It seems like all of the races I'm interested in including Ogden are closed:(

From steve ash on Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 12:52:52 from 174.52.96.106

Yeah Walter, I will check for next week sometime today and let you know. First four days of the week are tough to meetup though because of school.

Nice run Walter. Did you win the Striders series last year?

From Jon on Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 13:29:00 from 75.169.139.242

6:30 is awesome on that uphill. Is that Steve from Logan you are talking about? Nice job on a 2nd place finish. And yes, you are known for your insanity!

By the way- 9 deg in Logan this morning.

From Mattrow on Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 13:33:16 from 174.52.207.205

nice race, to run a 6:30 up that hill that is crazy fast.

From Lybi on Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 14:09:03 from 68.3.191.246

Great work, Walter! Sounds like a tough course, and you got such a smoking time! What a hill...

Congrats!

P.S. You and Ashbaker would be great running buddies, I think.

From missy on Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 14:36:45 from 70.56.98.26

Hot Damn Walter! Your race report is so exciting!!! I enjoyed reading it. I would love to be in your shoes really pushing and really competing with others..My races I just compete with myself. You are inspiring. :)

From redrooster on Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 14:40:36 from 67.40.114.2

wow, that is an awesome race for a cold day, great job. if you had gone a little further north though you would have lost another 10 degrees in temperature. looking forward to spring!

From Misty on Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 15:25:48 from 24.10.169.110

Burt, yes I did win the series last year. I always get better every race as the distance gets longer. But this year Ben is a solid runner. Itll be hard to catch him. He already has a 3 minute lead on me after 2 races.

Jon, I was running it with your strategy. It worked. I was able to push the hill pretty hard, but still felt like I couldve pushed harder. 9 deg, are you out of your faulken mind! yuk! Ok so ill stop my complaining.

Matt, I think when I hit the steep part, I saw a turtle pass me! I swear its so steep you could walk that faster then wasting energy running. lol

Lyberator! Hope you kick that crappy cold. How do you catch a cold in Arizona? I didnt think it was possible.

Missy, racing against others is such a rush! Planning a strategy and sticking to it even though you see your competition go in the sunset and then reeling them in and having your plan work is the best feeling. That hill is phwew so steep. Im glad its not in Boston! It wouldnt be called Heartbreak hill, it would definitely be called basterd breaker! lol

Hey Red Rooster! why didnt you come down and join us! Steve is cleaning up the Masters category! I will be up there in your neck of the woods for a run with you all maybe. At least when it warms up by say 30 degrees! lol

From Walter on Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 15:29:50 from 24.10.169.110

whoops that was from me you guys, not Misty. lol I guess she was logged in and I didnt notice it.

From missy on Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 15:42:17 from 70.56.98.26

Trying on Misty's clothes again Walter? Heheh...sorry I couldn't resist! Again, Awesome running Walter, I am impressed.

From Mattrow on Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 18:21:53 from 174.52.207.205

When I was going up hill I was also thinking I normal walk this fast. It took everything not to walk.

From Smooth on Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 19:23:00 from 174.23.239.148

GREAT race Walter! CONGRATS! What's with the women not letting you in the front! Did they have any idea who they're dealing with?! AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME job!!!

From Walter on Sun, Feb 21, 2010 at 00:40:30 from 24.10.169.110

I know it Matt. too steep of a hill at mile 5 huh?

Smooth, I know it. I asked nicely at first if i could squeeze next to them and they ignored me so I forced my way through the one. who knows. They should know better then to block the skinny guys out. lol

From steve ash on Sun, Feb 21, 2010 at 01:09:09 from 174.52.96.106

Sweet racing, Walter James!!!!

You have such a potty-mouth!!!

(Seriously, can't stop laughing. It's so funny how so many of us name our hills. But I will never forget that name!)

From Walter on Sun, Feb 21, 2010 at 14:18:10 from 206.53.157.246

Sometimes I let my emotions out in potty words. Haha so sorry to disturb your easy words your so used to. Lol really Teena? I think I heard a word or two come from you mouth at mile 12 of hobble creek. Lol

From jtshad on Mon, Feb 22, 2010 at 10:10:01 from 204.134.132.225
