Okie dokie. I got up at 4:15 got the clan together and met at the busses.  We rode up to the rainy start and it was evident that it was going to be a rainy marathon.  I read an article about extreme conditions in races and how you should not worry about time at all because most people panic when they see their times suffering.  I followed this.  I took off real easy my first mile was 6 minutes and it felt like I was pushing it.  I was with Jon Allen.  We pushed the pace a bit and we saw a group running together just before mile 7.  We caught them and used them a bit to break the wind.  After the steep hill, a few sped up but we decided not too. Good Decision Jon! Last year  I blasted up it and was passed severely by alot of runners in the end.  I made it to mile 11 and had to go bad so I stopped off the side of the road and found that I was losing alot of ground because it ended up being one of those long 1 minute pees!  lol  So I had to fight my way back to the pack and when I caught them, Jon had taken off.  So I started pushing myself to catch him and found myself by myself with a crappy head wind and just didnt have enough strength to catch him.  So I held back and used the pack to my advantage.  I let them brake my wind for 1/2 mile and then decided to share so I took a lead and James kept up. I think it was mile 15 or so when I found myself alone with James and we started to make a bit of a push.  We got to mile 19 and saw Jon Allen.  He had worked hard to be where he was and fought that head wind by his self!  I felt bad that I couldnt be there to help him and vice versa.  James had alot in him and we finally caught up to Jon and we looked good together all in the same blogger jersey!  We were 17th, 18th, and 19th overall and I dont think we passed anyone.  It was a soggy day and im glad its over.  I wanted a better finish time but not in these conditions.  After the race, I went back a mile and helped Trick and Allison (My old spin instructors) in  They did a 3:45 I believe.  Then I went back 2 miles and helped My old lady in.  She was helping her sister stay motivated and they hit a 5:30 which is great for a sister with 7 children and her first marathon without ever running in her life.

Way to go! Sounds like it was more of a swim than a run!

From walter on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 17:53:48

Heck yes! It was a duathlon! lol

From Lucia on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 17:58:19

Nice job Wall-e! And way to pace your friends and wife to the finish line afterwards, sounds like a par-tay! I'm proud of you man! Get some rest and some good food!

From marion on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 18:04:31

Yeah Walter!!! Rock on! Most excellent time :D

From tarzan on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 18:16:05

Great job, Walter! And even better for helping others finish. I think we all deserved an additional award for the head wind and cold.

From kelsey on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 18:30:12

Great job on not letting the weather get to you! Congrats on a good race.

From jona on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 18:31:45

Great race Walter. I really like hearing your strategy on the wind. Even though you didn't catch Jon, it paid to be smart and let the group catch you. Good thinking.

From Teena on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 19:52:40

Walter --

How in the heck did you run so fast and then help everyone in??? UNBELIEVABLE (and what a gentleman).

Congrats all around!!

From cgbooth23 on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 20:28:55

Sweet run, cool to hear how you guys came in and worked together, reminds me of biking, I need to utilize it more in running!

From RivertonPaul on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 22:03:59

Nicely done Walter. So impressive.

From walter on Sat, Oct 04, 2008 at 22:22:31

Lucia, you day will be here soon!

Marion, Thanks for the kind words. I wish you were at mile 25 to cheer me on! lol

Tarzan, I was feeling pretty good after a short rest so I decided to help and cheer on people.

Kelsey, Im glad I went into the race with that mindset. Thanks

Jona, thanks. I actually caught Jon and barely pulled out a win.

Teena, I missed you the whole entire time. How our paths crossed with so few people huh? Thanks, Ill have to check out how you did.

cgbooth, Thanks, when I was running I saw some wheel chair guys whizzing by me and I wished I could have just jumped on the back and took a bit of a break. lol

Paul, Thanks for that, did you run?

From dave holt on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 01:43:25

Great job Walter. It was good seeing you again.

From walter on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 08:35:55

Dave, likewise! I love coming down here to your neck of the woods! Especially right now in prime weather. Thanks for your nice weather. lol

From Matt on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 09:38:01

I think you did pretty awesome. I tucked in alot behind people as well. I can only imagine how tough it would have been towards the front with fewer runners to break the wind. I am just amazed but how much mileage you were willing to put in afterwards. My legs are still stiff as can be.

From christi on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 10:03:34

Excellent job out there!!! What a crazy day! You rocked it! I'm sorry too I missed you again at the FRB festivities- next time.

From kellies on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 19:18:26

Walter, Holy COW!! That is an incredible time! Way to go!! It was nice meeting you at the park the other night as well. Always nice to have a face to put with a name. You are an amazing athlete, keep up the good work!

From MichelleL on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 20:27:43

Great job Walter! You raced it smart.

From Superfly on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 20:37:35

Good job Walt- What can we say? I think a fun, fast relay somewhere tropical is in order to take the edge off. Any takers?

Good to see ya man!

From Michelle N. on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 21:25:59

Great job Walter. Truly amazing. You did so good. 18th in that big of a marathon is crazy. Actually, 18th in any marathon is crazy. Congrats.

From Camille on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 22:15:46

Good job Walter!!! That's awesome! I'm exhauted just thinking about it! LOL

From Jon on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 00:28:32

Walter- awesome race, buddy. We definitely both made a few strategic mistakes (i.e. surging by ourselves rather than working with other people) but you pulled out a strong finish. I think that is the best last 3 miles of a marathon you have ever run, too- no bonking despite bad conditions. Next time we'll have to get a bigger group and all work together the whole way!

From TylerS on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 10:26:08

Great job Walter, I am glad that I finally have a face to put with the name. You raced very smart today and it paid off!

From jtshad on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 13:15:01

Nicely done, way to run a smart race in tough conditions and have something left for the end. Great job!

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 16:41:55

Great job WALTER!!! And thanks for the cheering, it was great to have someone yell my name!!! It gave me quite the boost, so I will almost forgive you for telling Scott to leave me at 13 miles!!! He didn't, he stuck with me through puke and all----but I sure did leave him (when he told me to)!!

From josse on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 23:52:34

Great job on such a tough day!

From cody on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 00:02:16

Walter! Very impressive race especially coming off an illness. You are the man! Come up to Logan this winter and whip me into shape.

From wheakory on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 17:09:13

Great race Walter. I lost you guys because of a major brown code (just after mile 12) that took over 2 minutes and my hip from the fall wouldn't allow me to go faster than I wanted too, and try to catch up. Even with the hip I think I could have still hung up there if the miscues didn't happen.

From wheakory on Tue, Oct 07, 2008 at 17:12:19

Walter you finished the same time last year in these bad conditions. You know you've improved this year doing that in this weather. I'm thinking about doing the California International Marathon... Do you want to do it.

From walter on Thu, Oct 09, 2008 at 21:40:01

I just got back from Lake Powell so here goes my return thank you's! Man I leave for a week and come back to bitter cold temps!

Matt it was harder to go off on your own for sure! It took a few miles to catch back up to the pack I was with.

Christi- Yeah, I wished I had gotten down there earlier. I missed more of you than I wanted to meet.

Kellies- Yeah, I too was glad to meet you and though it was brief, I can now put a face to the kellies blog! Keep up the good work and come up to our neck of the woods sometime!?

Michelle L- You werent too far behind me, in fact you almost caught me on my pee break. I overdrank which is good because I felt like gold at the end, well except the last mile but other than that it was good. Nice to see you at the hotel! Youll get em next time!

Clyde-I would love to do a tropic thunder run! lol Ive got to go under the knife for my hernias first. Must rest now.

MichelleN- Did I miss you coming in? I cant remember if I saw you or not. Ill have to get with you and talk shop.

Camille-You should be sopping wet just thinking about us running that! lol

Jon- I was a bit disheartened when I caught back up to the group and saw you had made a surge! I actually tried to to the same but I wore myself out and the pack caught me so I used them for breaks and then pushed with James and a couple others there at the end to make a last surge. I wished I could have caught you earlier because I know we could have broken a 2:40. Oh well, next time.

From Kelli on Thu, Oct 09, 2008 at 21:44:35

Excuse me, what about my return thank you? Big jerk.

(That was called sarcasm, for those who do not know me!)

From Adam RW on Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 23:34:39

Also, I think it's awesome about Misty and her sister. That's what sisters are for

Hey blondie, I think its from my great personality and wake boarding skills. Ok maybe my personality right? come on someone back me up here. Anyone? Anyone?

From kungfublonde on Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 01:30:09

Your catching on Rachel! lol

From James on Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 13:02:38

I never told you that I enjoyed running with you and working together on a nasty day of racing. Thanks for the companionship. That was definitely your best marathon so far, well done!

From walter on Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 00:22:01

Same right back at you James! I kept wanting to break away from the pack and make a push but every time I did, I found myself being stopped by the wind. I wished the pack new each other better. We could have pushed the pace alot better. You are such a strong finisher, it amazes me! I wished I could have finished that last mile strong like you did! Way to go! Hope to see you out and about.
